Self Control Through Fasting

“Are Christians Too Fat?” And by Christians I mean American Christians. Americans in general are too fat. Food is offered in double portions at restaurants. Morgan Spurlock wrote about his experience of eating only fast food in his Super Size Me report. The high fat, salt and carbohydrate content of such food made him fat and put him at risk of illness. So, not only do Americans in general eat too much, they eat too much of the wrong kind of food.

Fasting is a lost discipline on many American Christians. Fasting, of course, does nothing to change God, but everything to change us. Fasting is an act of self control, and is a form of crucifying the flesh. And this is the concern I have about American Christianity. If one does not control what one eats, it is probable that one does not exercise self control in other arenas.

If American Christianity is going to become healthy, American Christians need to exercise self control in their diets. Is it a fair question to ask that if you see a fat Christian, are they walking in victory or defeat? Such cries of “eating is all we have left”, in my view, expresses complete misunderstanding of the discipleship in that believer.
