Balanced With What?

It is a Christian mantra to say, "We need balance." Really? Balance what? Sin with righteousness? Hate with love? It is a thoughtless statement that has become a sacred cow. Of course, what is implied is that we remain middle of the road and not go into extremes. Frequently what is being implied is the world with the spirit, as in believing God for healing, but being balanced with the use of medicine. The sentiment is not scriptural, in truth it is antithetical to scriptures. We are to flee lusts. We are to hate sin. We are to deny self. All those statements are extremes.

In the King James Version of the Bible, the word "balance" only occurs 8 times. In those occurances only two thoughts are intended. One, is the thought of judgment, such as this:

Job 31:6
Let me be weighed in an even balance, that God may know mine integrity. (KJV)

and the second is the plain sense of measuring weights:

Isa 46:6
They lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, and hire a goldsmith; and he maketh it a god: they fall down, yea, they worship. (KJV)

Nowhere have I seen the word used in the sense that Christians intend today. What is often rightly meant, but not said, is in reference to comparing scripture to other scripture, and have that balance. In that regard, I give an hearty Amen! However, why not say we should consider the full counsel of scripture? The reason that may not be used is simple laziness. Too many are too lazy to think carefully about the words they use. And that is also against the counsel of scriptures.
