Appendix CThe Secular World View The Myth of Evolution Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils. 1 Timothy 4:1. Throughout the history of mankind, explanations for life that exclude the knowledge of man's sin toward his Creator, have been espoused as the answer to the question of man's existence. The Sumerians up through the Romans called upon a pantheon of gods that bore the sinful image of man in capriciousness and selfishness. Because of their alienation from the Holy God, they had no understanding of genuine goodness. Among the Greeks, some disregarded the selfish gods of Athens, and developed philosophies that rationalized the goodness of man. Those rationalities took a set back when the Creator came to Earth as Christ Jesus. The Renaissance and the Enlightenment brought discovery and science as alternatives to man's condition. With the coming of Charles Darwin, a "new" theory to the origin of life was presented: evolution. But, was this really "new"? I think not. The theory of evolution postulates that life began in a primordial ocean as simple organisms that gradually evolved into complicated life forms. While the specific details differ, the concept of gradual change goes back to mythology. In the Greek myth of creation, Chaos, the vast seething confusion was all there was. Note that evolutionists believe that the material of the universe has always existed, but has been transformed. After a tremendous lapse oftime, Chaos ceased to be mere darkness and confusion, but resolved itself into two great deities, Gaia, or Mother Earth, and Uranus, or the Heavens. Likewise in evolution the cosmic material exploded, and the matter flung off into space coalesced as stars and planets. From Gaia and Uranus came their children, some as hideous monsters, and others as the Titans - giants of the Earth. In both the myth and the theory, life happens spontaneously and gradually. Darwin's theory is a rehash of the same ancient myths. DARWINIn 1809 Charles Darwin was born. John Locke's (1632 -1704) philosophic doctrine of "tabla rasa," (i.e., man's heart is born with a blank slate, hence repudiating man's natural sinfulness) had been widely accepted. David Hume's (1711-1776) teaching that there was no right or wrong had also gained ground. So when, as an adult, Darwin had developed his theory of natural selection, the world was ready to embrace it. In 1831 Darwin sailed from Devonport on Her Majesty's ship, "Beagle," to continue exploration of different islands in the southern hemisphere near Tierra del Fuego. His diary, "The Voyage of the Beagle" became the basis for his landmark publication, On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection printed in [3]. Through this work the concept of "survival of the fittest" came into popular thinking. This theory dismissed a Creator for a concept of gradual evolution. Without a Creator, there is neither a first man, Adam, who sinned, nor a Creator sinned against. If man is a blank slate without a sinful nature and there really is no right or wrong, then "might makes right." This theory of Darwin's set the stage for Marxist communism (which is always implemented through totalitarianism) followed by Freudian psychology (to salve the guilty conscience) - all of which deny the sinfulness of man and therefore an accountability to a God of Judgment. Upon looking at the many similarities of living creatures and by placing them in a systematic categorization of types, a cursory view of the facts would seem to justify the theory. The process of birth from two cells to human infant seem to demonstrate an evolutionary process in the womb. Genetic mutation also seems to lend credence to the theory. After all, look at the many variations in people and look at how geneticists have caused hybrid growth in plants! Given enough time, couldn't evolution occur after all? TIME THE MAGIC INGREDIENTTime is the linchpin to the theory. Without it, the theory collapses. Since the theory of evolution assumes life came about accidentally, it relies on chance. Chance is a matter of odds. In order for the impossible odds to have a chance, millions and billions of years are needed. The theory of evolution also assumes that the material universe is eternal, which allows the chance of time to work. If this is true, then the theory is acceptable. Since the Bible indicates that the earth and the whole universe is only about 6,000 years old [4], then this would make evolution impossible and therefore to be wholly rejected. UNIFORMITARIAN THINKINGSecular scientists assume that all things exist the same as always with very gradual changes. This is uniformitarian thinking which gives no room for catastrophic changes or any other possible world conditions. We need to remember that when secular scientists (and the rest of us) look upon the past, all we see is the present and the immediate past. Secular scientists think they see a small beginning in evolution, that has moved through an enormous past of 3 and a half billion years, and continues to move to a glorious future where mankind will evolve into perfection.
This hope is not based upon factual reality, since the second law of thermodynamics states that all things are moving from order to disorder, which is called entropy. The Bible teaches that all things are cursed, hence, in a state of entropy. The small beginning of God's creation has a limited past of just 6,000 years that is falling toward a corrupt future, which, as Jesus said, "Except those days be shortened, there should be no flesh saved" (Matt. 24:22a), and would utterly perish except for God's intervention. The fallen nature of man plummets our future downhill. It has not completely sunk because of the new birth given to the church. Since the church age, the nations of the world have been restrained from utter doom. There is an eternity past and an eternity future that is incalculable. But that past belongs to God alone with no creation. Fortunately the eternal future, that will come after the Judgment of Christ for |
