Tribes by Seth Godin

Tribes by Seth Godin

I have so many good books that I want to read.  I do not have Seth Godin’s book yet.  Seth is an internet guru.  This is a business book, not a book on religion.  But Brother Maynard posted a blog on this book that really captured my attention.

Last year, through another blog, I read another book on business, The Starfish and the Spider:  the Unstoppable Power of Leaderless Organizations, which unintentionally became a powerful argument for the Church having only the One leader Jesus Christ.  The excerpt that Brother Maynard has taken from this book is the same way.

In a nutshell, faith is the basis of all that we do in business (and the church by extension) and religion is the practice that should enhance our faith, to strengthen it and preserve it.  So as Seth is applying it to business, those things that support our faith in the business venture are good, while there can be practices that undermine our faith and should be abandoned.  This is clearly true in the Church.  There are religious practices that enhance and strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ and there are religious practices that undermine and weaken our faith in Christ by transposing our faith to the religious system instead of to Christ.

Dang it, Brother Maynard! Now I have to add another book to my long list of reading material to read.  But thanks for sharing.

  1. You’re welcome. And it’s only 150 pages, a very short read! ;^) It has a lot to do with leadership, of a sort that fits in *very* well with Starfish and Spider or Clay Shirkey’s Here Comes Everybody.

  2. Alex,
Ha ha ha ha! I love that last line! Indeed, my “Book Wish List” also has grown to a little over 150 titles! Argh! And I still have 3 books here at home that have been stacked up near my computer collecting dust for the past 2 months!

I, too, have recently discovered quite a few blogposts discussing Seth’s books. This being one of them. They sound interesting. I’m not “hopping” on board quite yet. I enjoy reading quite a few reviews from a broad-spectrum of readers, then seeing if my heart resonates with the overall message I hear, before adding it to my list.

    Thanks for the “pre-view!”

    Blessings,
    ~Amy :)

  3. Bro Maynard -”Here Comes Everybody”!!?? Slow down the good books, please. Ah, who am I kidding. I know I will pick that one up, too!

Amy, looks like we are both in the same boat. But we are both avid readers and writers. Thanks for the input.
