A Tale of Two Movies

Posted on October 20, 2008 by Alexander

Welcome back! Be sure to leave a comment after reading the blog.

In the last month two movies came out that had been promoted on Christian radio.  I don’t see movies in a timely manner, so my comments are dated.  Nonetheless there may be some of you who have not seen these movies, so I am still giving my 2 cents.

My wife and I went to see An American Carol first.  That was a mistake and waste of money.  We knew that it had gotten an “F” by a secular reviewer, but went thinking it was because he had a liberal bias.

The movie is a poor adaptation of Dickens “Christmas Carol” by David Zucker in the heavy handed slapstick style of Airplane for American conservative politics.  The Scrooge of the story is played by Kevin Farley in a thin paradoy of Michael Moore (called Michael Malone) as an anti-American documentary film-maker who sees the reality of Terrorists by the visitation of one ghost, Kelsey Grammer,  as General Patton.  There are two other ghosts, George Washington played by John Voight and a country star that I am unfamiliar with, but they are brief cameos.

My wife liked the first two thirds and tired of the heavy handed slapstick by the last third.  I liked the first third and was grieved by the last two thirds because I realized it was more  of the same conservative propaganda that is foisted upon us by the Rothschilds and the banking dynasties who control our country and most of the nations of the world.  If I had believed those lies that the conservatives believed, then I would have laughed.   But I am aware that both the liberals and the conservatives promote lies.  We are not in a conflict of communist liberals verses patriotic conservatives, but are all dupes of a fascist police state in our nation.  If you are a conservative Christian who still thinks that America is a republic, then go ahead and watch the movie because you will laugh as your “enemies” the liberals are made fun of.  If you know what is actually going on in this country, the movie will grieve you as it grieved me.

The second movie, Fireproof, was a wonderful film.  It is a godly movie that greatly touched me since I went through the same experience, too.

Kirk Cameron plays fire fighter, Caleb Holt, whose marriage to Catherine (played by Erin Bethea) had slid to the point of divorce. The cause is not clear, only the symptoms of selfishness by Caleb as he dreams of buying a boat with “his” money and is obsessed with internet porn.

Catherine files the papers for divorce and Caleb would have accepted them except his father, John Holt (played by Harris Malcolm),  asks Caleb to hold off for forty days while he tries the daily guides of a hand written book that he gives Caleb to follow.

Even though we know Caleb has fallen into selfishness we are not given any reason as to why he fell into such selfishness.  I say this because i went through the same danger of destroying my own marriage with the symptoms of internet porn, but the porn was not the cause.  In my case I was greatly disappointed that we could not have children since we married late in life past child bearing years. Men who get hooked on porn do so for some other root cause like mine.  We are Christians already, unlike the two characters in the movie who find Christ in the middle of the movie, so I knew divorce was not an option, which is why I fell into internet porn which allowed me to imagine I could have children with other women. Of course, that is still adultery of the heart and caused great harm to my wife and marriage.  But God…..

But God loves us too much to let us fall apart.  However, our marriage could have fallen apart if I did not have a repentant heart.  And God worked with my repentant heart to bring our marriage to a wholesome place.  The steps that God used in my life were the same steps that the movie Fireproof uses.  I don’t know if the screenwriters went through those steps themselves, but the steps shown are clearly from God.

So as not to spoil the movie for those who have not seen it, I heartily encourage everyone who takes God and marriage seriously to see the film.  It has many funny scenes in the movie so it is not a heavy handed film.  The balance of drama with humor is perfect so the film is easy to become absorbed in. Go see this movie.

Thanks Amy. Without revealing too much of the movie, I think it is notable that Caleb is not delivered from his porn addiction because of an “accountability group”. Rather the 40 steps begin with self denial and doing daily acts of love, even though he had no feelings of love. In building this climate of love, he sees what real love is that Christ demonstrated on the cross, which opens his heart to receive Christ. After his new birth he continues to build this climate of love which allows Christ’s love to flow through him to his wife.

This is the way believers are called to love one another. We build a climate of love, even if we don’t feel love, and it opens the floodgates for love to flow out. This is how I “fell” in love with my wife again and her with me. Accountability is the law, not love.

    Alex,
Thank you for posting these two movie reviews. Indeed, An Ameican Carol doesn’t look all that good. Fireproof, however, I have added to my Netflix movie Queue and look forward to seeing it when it eventually comes out on DVD. I’ve heard many good things about it.

Thank you for sharing your personal experience with your marriage and porn addiction. Alex, I so respect and honor your openness and honesty with those struggles. So happy that Papa is big enough, when we come to Him in full submission, a genuinely repentant heart and ask Him to help us overcome. He is Good.

    Blessings,
    ~Amy :)
