The Jews are Not in Covenant with God

Jesus still loves the Jews

Published on: Jan 20, 2010

I bought this picture while a student at Christ for the Nations. It is still hanging over my fireplace as a reminder of the love God has for the Jewish people. As a student at CFNI I earned a Jewish Studies Minor degree. The degree program required that I go to Israel during the summer, where I lived on a kibbutz for 3 months at Ramat Rachel. The kibbutz is between Jerusalem and Bethlehem. In the early morning hours I would sit in the ruins on Ramat Rachel which overlook the Temple Mount for prayer. I had been to the Wailing Wall on several occasions since Jerusalem was in walking distance from the kibbutz.

The Jewish people have had a profound influence in my life. When I was in 7th grade I was drawn to two Jewish girls, Laurie and Leslie, although I was too immature to have a relationship with them. In high school I lived with my best friend and his family for 1 school year. Their family are Sephardic Jews from Spain many generations back. I was drawn to him because of his innate since of morality. I was not a Christian then. I was raised in a secular atheist family who believed in evolution. I love their family and his parents gave me the first example of a loving husband and wife since my own parents were divorced. I love Paul Wilbur and messianic worship. I love Jewish humor.

A Messianic Jew led me to Christ when I was 32. Igor was an Ashkenazi Jew. As a brand new Christian I worked at the Jewish Community Center while I read the Old Testament. Since I had no religious background, the practices of the Christian Church at large seemed unbiblical (and still is), so I naturally gravitated towards messianic congregations, although I found the prancing around with the Torah scroll to seem a bit idolatrous. My draw towards a Judaic expression of Christianity ended while I was working on the kibbutz. The Lord spoke to me suddenly, and said, “Stop it, you’re not Jewish.”

I stopped trying to be Jewish and began my 20 year research of gentile Christianity, which is a topic for another post. The reason for writing this post is because I know many Christians who think God still has a covenant with the Jews by which they can gain their own salvation. Many more Christians do not believe that but do think that God has special favor on the Jews and are ardent supporters of Israel. In their ardor they subconsciously think that Israel is a righteous nation that does no wrong. And a huge number of Christians want Israel to exist so the end time prophecies will be fulfilled.

I love the Jewish people and thoroughly enjoyed living in Israel that summer. But as a student of Truth I have also had to ask the question of why anti-semitism exists? I even wonder why the term, “anti-semitic,” even exists. The term is understood to refer to hatred of Jews. So why doesn’t the term say anti-jewish? Semitic means “descended from Shem” which includes the Arabs and Persians amongst others. Even anti-jewish doesn’t make sense since Jew is short for Judah, which is only one tribe of Israel. So if someone hates Leonard Cohen, he is hating a descendant of Levi, since “Cohen” is Hebrew for “priest”. A Levite, technically, is not a Jew. So a very broad term, anti-semite, is used for a very specific family. The truth is, the expression is a type of slander used against anyone who has any objections at all to some Jewish activity, just as “homophobe” is a similar form of slander used against anyone who speaks the truth regarding that sexual perversion. Slander does not come from God.

Jesus is Not a Jew

This is contrary to popular Christian opinion. Jesus was Jewish, but no longer is Jewish. Jewish is another word that needs clarifying. Jesus was a descendant of Judah, therefore was Jewish in that sense. But Jewish does not, and has not for two thousand years meant descended from Judah. It means rabbinic Judaism. That is, followers of the Mosaic Covenant according to the rabbinic teachings found in the Talmud and by the Mishna. There are many Jews that are not descended from any of the 12 tribes of Israel. For example, the Ethiopian Jews embraced Judaism after the Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon (1 Kings 10 & 2 Chron 9). The Ethiopian Eunuch reading Isaiah that Philip met (Acts 8:20-38) was a Jew who had made one of the pilgrimages to Jerusalem because of this earlier conversion of the nation by Sheba. They are all Jews only in the rabbinc sense, not by genetics.

Knowing that Jesus paid a tribute that He made clear that He did not have to pay (Matt 17:24-27) so as not to offend, Jesus no doubt observed all the rabbinic practices that did not violate the true meaning of the Torah. So in that sense, Jesus was also a rabbinic Jew as well as a genetic Jew. But He is no longer either one. Paul explains this to the Roman Jews in chapter 7.

Rom 7:1-4
1 Do you not know, brothers– for I am speaking to men who know the law– that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage.
3 So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man.
4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to God. (NIV)

Verse 1 very clearly says who Paul is taking to: Jews, not Gentiles (“I am speaking to men who know the law”) . That means Jewish believers in Christ who are trying to understand how the Torah and Christ fit together.

The metaphor of marriage in verses 2 and 3 is more than just a metaphor. Marriage is a covenant, and the illustration shows the only way a covenant can lawfully be broken: death. Likewise the Mosaic covenant can only be broken by death. But the death that Paul speaks of is not that of the Jewish people, but of God Himself (through Jesus) and every individual who dies with Christ.

Of course, God as a Spirit can not die. But when Yahweh became the man Yeshua, He was able to die to the Mosaic covenant. He had to die to it, or He could not bring in a New Covenant.

So in verse 4, Paul is telling the Jews that when they accepted Christ, they were no longer in covenant with God through the Torah, because God in Christ died to that covenant as they, too in Christ, died to the Mosaic Covenant. Therefore, they were free to leave that covenant behind and embrace the gift of life in Christ. Their marriage to the Old Covenant ended when the Husband of that covenant died so they could be married again in a New Covenant.

In His resurrection and glorification, Jesus stopped being Jewish. He is the new species of humanity, the new creation that is neither Jew nor Greek. His Jewishness has ended so the last Adam, who was a living soul, could become the first born from the dead, who is a quickening spirit. He loves the Jewish people, and fully understands them, but He is neither in covenant with them by Moses, nor is He one of them.

Judeo-Christian is an Oxymoron

This expression is used in reference to history and heritage. It implies an similarity if not a unity in idea and thought. The expression is misleading. Judaism is the enemy of God, not an ally. Christians need to stop using this term. Judaism refers specifically to rabbinic interpretation of the Old Testament, not to the Old Testament. It was this interpretation that rejected Yahweh Himself for a god of their own choosing. When they, and all Jews today, reject Jesus, they are rejecting both Yahweh and the spirit of the Old Testament.

The Old Testament and the New Testament are the same document from different angles. There is a reason the Old Testament is included in the the Bible with the New Testament. Jesus was the physical incarnation of the Spirit of the Old Testament, but the Judaizers rejected Him, and thus it.

I believe, King David, for example, was a Christian in the fullest sense of the word. He did not count his works as righteousness, I believe he trusted in the promise of the Messiah to come. Job definitely trusted in the promise of the Messiah to come. He said, “For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that he shall stand at the latter day upon the earth” (Job 19:25 KJV).

Abraham trusted in the promise of the Messiah to come. Jesus said, “Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.” (John 8:56 KJV). The Judaic idea of the Messiah is a conquering king, but David, Job and Abraham understood that He would be their Redeemer.

Abraham Was Not a Jew

The messianic Jew who led me to Christ once said that Abraham was the only Jew in the world when he was alive. He was making a joke at that time, but it seems that many Christians think this way. I say this because many cite Genesis 12:3 as a promise that God will bless those that bless Abram as applying to the Jews. It does not. It only applied to Abram. If it applies to the descendants of Abram, then you have to apply it to all the descendants of Hagar (Ishmael), Sarah (Isaac), and Keturah (6 sons: Zimram, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shua). And from Isaac you have to include Esau and his descendants as well as Jacob’s 12 sons. It is even a larger stretch to apply it to all who claim to be Jews, such as the Ethiopian Jews, or the “god-fearer” gentiles who convert to Judaism.

Abraham did not practice any form of Judaism, accept the circumcision. But as Paul tells us in Romans 4, that circumcision was a symbol of his faith in the promise of Yahweh given to him which was counted to him as righteousness (Genesis 15:6), not the Mosaic covenant, nor the rabbinic interpretations of the Torah. And we know from the book of Romans that to live under the law is to live under the curse, not blessing. At best we can say, Abram was a Semite since he is descended from Shem. He was also a Hebrew, since he is descended from Heber. But not a Jew.

The case might be made that God, for the sake of the Patriarchs, has some favor on Israel today because of the many times in the Old Testament He made that statement. And, too, there must have been many unnamed followers of Yahweh in Israel who understood the redemption of the Messiah to come (like Abraham and Job) who genuinely trusted Yahweh. For those who purged the idols from their midst, God promised mercy on those who loved Him unto the thousands (Ex. 20:6). Which brings us to what Paul said in Romans 11 about Israel being the natural branches, their ability to be grafted back in. I love deeply many messianic Jews that I know, and I have seen what a blessing to the body they are when they are saved. But this is not because they are simply Jews, but because their hearts are turned towards the Truth about God, hence they accept Yeshua as their Messiah.

God does not give anyone or people group special favor. He is no respecter of persons. However, He does has favor on one person, His only begotten Son in whom He was well pleased. He lavishly pours out His favor on Jesus Christ. We become recipients of that lavish favor when we abide in His Son. Anyone who surrenders their lives and join in the New Covenant of His Son, Jew or Gentile, steps into that favor.

Ashkenazi Jews May Not Be from Israel

I am going out on a limb here. As I stated earlier, there are two branches of Jewry: Sephardic and Ashkenazi. The Sephardic Jews are traced as culturally developing in the Iberian and Spanish peninsulas. The Ashkenazis culturally developed in the Rhine valley in Germany. It is the Ashkenazi Jews that developed Yiddish. The Ashkenazi Jews by far outnumber the Sephardic Jews.

The limb I am standing on is my understanding that the Ashkenazi may be the descendants of the Khazar Jews. This is disputed by many, and believed by many others. If this is true, then the Ashkenazi Jews would not be descended from one of the 12 tribes of Israel, but from descendants of Kozar a son of Togarmah the son of Japheth. The Khazar Jews, like the Ethiopians, are Jews by conversion and culture, not genes. And if the Ashkenazi Jews are descendants of the Khazars, that would mean that most of the Jews people know are not from one of the 12 tribes of Israel, but are gentiles in descent.

The Anti Christ Will Be a Jew

It amazes me how the possibility of the Anti Christ being a Jew is dismissed by so many Christian leaders. The Jews will not accept a Messiah who is not descended from David. That is plainly obvious. Prophecy scholars and buffs go out of their way to “prove” that the Anti-Christ will be a European gentile. The fear of being labeled (slandered) as an anti-semitic has a hold on most Christians. Many Christians who love the Jewish people (I am one) do not want to think that such an evil person could come from the Jews. But let’s face the truth. All who reject Jesus as the Messiah are already anti-christs. That includes every Christian before their regeneration.

And if what Paul said in Romans 11 about the natural branches being able to be grafted back into the vine, implies a natural spirituality of Jews, it makes sense to me that Satan would want to inhabit a Jew who has genetic tendencies for spirituality. Christians blindly categorize spirituality as only being responsive to the Holy Spirit. That is a foolish assumption in my opinion. Being spiritual simply means being responsive to the spirit world through our human spirits. Being sensitive to demons is spiritual. The connotation of spirituality as being positive alone must be set aside. Jews embrace all kinds of spirituality: from the New Age, Eastern religions, to the Cabala.

And according to Ezekiel this went on in the priesthood in the Temple itself 3,000 years ago, so why should we think it is not still going on? The Cabala is a satanic book of the Jews. Many Jews follow the Cabala. The Talmud is steeped in the Cabala. There are Jews who are primed for Satanic possession. It is a logical conclusion to believe that when the Man of Sin appears, he will be a Jew.

So what is my point? Jews need salvation. They have no salvation if they do not accept the gift of life through Christ. They are going to Hell just like everyone else who rejects Jesus. Christians should not regard Jews as fellow heirs of salvation. Nor should we regard them as co-laborers in the Gospel in any way. The political arena is not the arena of the Kingdom.

I have never met an anti-semite. Likewise I have never met a racist nor a homophobe. These kinds of labels are smoke screens with self fulfilling prophecies. Throw out these accusations enough and eventually you will produce bigots who do think that way. I am not saying that bigots don’t exist. I am saying that there are not as many as we are led to believe. The people who throw out these accusations use them as a deterrent to criticism of any kind.

We should not accept anyone simply because they bear a label. Neither should we reject anyone because of their label. We need to look on everyone as individuals. There are wonderful people that I love who are Jewish that have no ill will towards anyone. There are also individual Jews who wish to destroy the world and bring in the Anti-Christ in a global government. Some of these evil Jews, may not be genetic Jews at all. Yet there are genetic Jews who are bent on destroying Christianity.

My purpose in writing this is to wake up the Church to think soberly regarding the Jews. They are no more our enemies as a people than are the Muslims as a people. Yet there are the elite leaders of Islam who want to force all to bow to Allah. And there are elite leaders of Judaism who want all to bow to their rule. We love everyone, including our enemies, because all have sinned and Christ died for all, but we are still to be wise as serpents yet harmless as doves.

Post Script March 22, 2012

An additional realization has occurred to me on this topic. Disregarding the Khazar Jews for the moment,  there is another reason to say that the Jews are not in covenant with God.  They never had a covenant with God.  God made his covenants with Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, whom He later called Israel.  The genetic Jews are the descendants of Judah. God made no covenant with Judah.  He made His covenant with Israel, and Judah participated in the covenant of Israel, then later God made his Mosaic covenant with Israel, of which Judah was participant.

It is erroneous to say that the United States has a Judeo-Christian heritage.  What is really meant is a Mosaic-Christians heritage in that our civil government was based upon the 10 commandments and principles of the Mosaic  covenant.  The genetic Jews developed an extensive set of traditions, particularly during the Babylonian captivity. When Cyrus gave Ezra, Zerrubabal, then Nehemiah to return to Jerusalem to rebuild the temple then the wall, they brought back then further developed the Talmudic traditions that Jesus repudiated during His earthly ministry.

excellent research….Bradshw’s “Goldsmith”series presents some of this lineage info on the ‘pretend’ Jews, as i call them.
They mostly have destroyed a lot of the world accetance of Israel by hiding amongs them pretending that its a ‘Jew thing’ that they are bringing about in world chaos.
Too bad the part that is the moneychangers (Jesus had a special place in his heart for those), by controlling all the worlds monies they buy Kontrol & manupulate everything else to the point that its blatantly obvious, now.

Thank you, John.
There are many websites dedicated to the conspiracy of global government. My interest is in informing the church so that the church will stop being used as dupes by these elite dynastic banking families. The church reads the book of Revelations, Daniel and Ezekiel by seeing only the tip of the iceberg but has very little understanding of the bulk of the iceberg that reveals that tip. Support for Zionism, in particular, is sacrosanct for many Christians. Getting people to see more clearly the Truth may remove the blinders on Christians who think that Israel can do no wrong since it is end times prophecy fulfillment. It may be prophecy fulfillment just as Jesus was prophecised to be crucified, but the Bible makes it clear that he was crucified by “wicked hands” (Acts 2:23). Just because God uses wicked hands that does not mean that He causes the hands to be wicked nor does he condone those wicked hands. We need to open our eyes and see the reality of the evil that moves us towards global government. I intend to write several more posts on other points of this topic.

I was (am) looking for the name of the artist of the picture of Jesus at the Wall, which brought me to your blog. Since you own the picture can you tell me the name of the artist. Thank You.

I am yet pondering the depth you brought to the question of covenants. Although I understood ‘leaving the law’ for Christ, I saw even more from your thoughtful delineation.

The painting is by Beth Sweigard and is called, “The Wailing Wall.” She released the painting in 1984 and sells prints in various places. Here is one location that I found. They list a 20? x 16? print for $54.50. Thank you for taking the time to read my post.

This is filled with good thinking mixed with really twisted thinking. I suggest you think more clearly and thoroughly about what Judaism means (it is not about the worship of Jesus, but is ALL about the worship of God — as the Muslims say so beautifully and correctly, “there is no God but God”) and the two words are not synonyms. To make them so simply allows you to artificially make yourself “right” by arguing an empty tautology.

Thank you for your comment. If my thinking it is twisted it is because the gospel is twisted from the world’s point of view. The mystery of the gospel is the simultaneous deity and humanity of Jesus Christ. He is not a demi-god as in Greek mythology nor Hindu pantheism. He is Yahweh the eternal life who created all things and is usually called simply, God. But He is also a created being sharing with us fully in His humanity. Through His humanity He died to the covenant that He had with Israel. And through His humanity enabled Israel to be free from their former spouse to marry another (Rom 7). Judaism is not the Mosaic covenant, through which no one ever fulfilled, but the Talmudic interpretation of the Mosaic Covenant. Yeshua made it clear that if they truly followed the Mosaic covenant in its spirit and truth, it would bring them to Him. It does not, however, because Judaism worships a god of man’s imagination, not the Creator of the universe, who is Yeshua.

Jer 31:32-33
32 Not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was an husband unto them, saith the LORD:
33 But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people. (KJV)

Ezek 36:26-27
26 A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you an heart of flesh.
27 And I will put my spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and ye shall keep my judgments, and do them. (KJV)

Jer 3:8
8 And I saw, when for all the causes whereby backsliding Israel committed adultery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous sister Judah feared not, but went and played the harlot also. (KJV)

There are Jews who are in covenant with God, but they are Jews who have accepted the New Covenant created by Yeshua.

The Bible says that God is nigh to them who are of a broken heart. National Israel has a broken heart from their thousands of years of sufferings.
No people has suffered like Israel. Why? Because they are hated by Satan.
For anyone to think Israel is not close to the heart of God doesn’t even know God.
The entire Bible is about Jesus and the nation of Israel.
How God created and raised up that nation to bring Christ into the world.
No, there is no way God has cast away his people as Paul said.
Paul said if their rejection of Christ has brought blessings to the world how much more when they receive him. It will be life from the dead. This is clear that national Israel will be saved.
Paul was a Jew an Israelite, and he was saved, called, and commissioned by God to take the gospel to the gentiles. Even the disciples were Israelites.
When God told you to Stop it you’re not Jewish, notice he did not say “and neither are they Jewish.”
There is still Israel and the unconditional promises made to the nation will be fulfilled no matter what.
You say there are genetic Jews bent on destroying Christianity. Jesus said the gates of hell will not prevail against his church so there is no problem.
Paul said the Jew has advantage because to them were committed the oracles of God.
Do you think God will forsake the nation that he committed his word to?
The gifts and callings of God are without repentance.
God will never take away from Israel what he gave to them. His favor his gifts and his promises to the Patriarchs.
Your post is replacement theology disguised as concern for Christianity.

I have no disagreement with you, only clarification.
Point 1: salvation does not come by a broken heart. A broken often precedes salvation, but salvation only comes by faith in Jesus Christ.
Point 2: there is no disagreement that God loves Israel. The issue is that Israel does not love God. All who love God will come to repentance and godly sorrow in accepting the salvation of Jesus Christ. All Jews who accept this salvation gain it. All who reject Christ are rejecting His salvation, thus reject God. The Jews who hold fast to the Mosaic Covenant can not be saved. Period. That Covenant was meant to show sin, and Romans makes it clear that no one can live by that covenant.
Point 3: the unconditional promises of God to Israel were made to Abraham and have already been fulfilled in Christ. The Mosaic covenant is extremely conditional.
Point 4: I did not say “genetic” Jews. The Ashkenazi Jews, which make up 90% of Judaism, are not descendants of Judah, nor Israel. More likely, they are descendants of Esau mixed with Japhethites of Khazaria. Through intermarriage with Sephardic Jews, who are more likely to be the genetic descendants of Judah, there is no clear line between Ashkenazim and Sephardim.
Point 5: Yes the gifts and callings of God are without repentance. But the gift can be spurned by the recipient. As for replacement theology, Paul speaks of spiritual Israel in Romans. Spiritual Israel is neither Jew nor Gentile. It is Jesus Christ which is alluded to by Isaiah.
Point 6: My concern is for both Christianity and Israel. For Christians not to be duped into thinking that the modern state of Israel is the restoration of Israel by God. If it is, then it by wicked hands. For Israel, because they have no salvation apart from Jesus Christ.

  1. Lynn says:

I also own and love “the Wailing Wall” have studied it often and had many thoughts as to what message Beth was trying to give. Would be very interested in what message you think the picture is trying to tell. Thank you.

  2. Alexander says:

The message of the painting is clear – Jesus was a Jew who loves the Jewish people, which is my same feeling. Even though my article reminds believers that the Old Testament covenant of Moses is an impossibility for salvation, Jesus wants all the Jews to come to Him through the blood of His New Covenant. Whether they are genetically Jews descended from Judah or not is irrelevant to the Lord. He wants all to be saved, and He loves everyone, not because of what they do, but because of who we all are as the image of God.

  3. Lynn says:

Thank you so much for your answer, I realize that my question is not on the same level as the others and I really did not think you would answer… I always thought the picure was showing our Lords great sorrow and pain (his tears) because he could not not answer their prayers (he is holding a prayer request) because as much as he loved them they did not believe in him…. thank you again.

  4. Alexander says:

It is my delight to answer questions that clearly are in response to viewing the blog. Even those who disagree, I will post and respond to them. I am only one believer who cares about the Church and the world, not some professional making a living through the site. The only ones I do not post nor respond to are the completely insincere spammers who are selling their own websites and are trying to use my site as a link building site for SEO optimization. Those comments are always obsequious flatteries that are vague in comment and clearly demonstrate that the commenter never even read the blog.

Your interpretation of the painting is excellent, and I think you understand the artist’s intention better than me. Thank you for giving me your view point.

  5. Julie says:

I noticed that you said you had that beautiful art print of Yeshua at the Western Wall and that you bought it. Where? I would love to have it hanging in my house. If you could let me know via email, that would be wonderful. Todah … Yes, Yeshua is Jewish, loves the Jewish people and desires that all Israel will be saved. 🙂

  6. Igor says:

My name is also Igor 🙂 (in America I struggle with this name because of a bad movie Frankenstein, its encouraging to see God’s minister with same name:) ) so my question in regards to Israel, Doesn’t it says that now it is a time for gentiles salvation because Israel rejected Christ, but once the time of salvation for gentiles will end then the Antichrist will come, and it is written that they will see the One who they Pierced, -which many explain that this will be the time for salvation of Israel, and it also even has a specific number in revelation of 144,000 that will be saved (which many explain it is of Jewish descent, in times of the Antichrist) Can you please explain how you understand this?

Also in terms of “Paul said the Jew has advantage because to them were committed the oracles of God” this does not talks about gentiles but Israel, so even though salvation is only through Christ but they are still God’s chosen nation and He promised that part of Israel will be saved in the end once the times of the gentiles will be completed. Thank you

  7. Alexander says:

Thank you for your questions, Igor. First, I was led to Christ by a Russian Messianic Jew named Igor. I am sorry for the teasing you had received because of the Frankenstein story. My name is not Igor, but Alex. But Igor has been in the ministry for 40 years and is still going strong. Regarding the statement of Paul in Romans 11:25, you are correct. But the salvation that will come to the Jews is not because God is in covenant with Israel, but because he repeatedly promised to save a remnant. This promise of God is an unconditional promise on His part. This will happen when Jesus returns and some will realize that Jesus is the real Messiah, not the Anti-Christ they had been following.

The Bible never calls the Jews the chosen people. That is an interpretive expression on their part. Who was chosen? Jesus was. Jesus is the Elect. All who abide in Christ are the Elect and are the Chosen people because they have chosen to be joined to the only one who was chosen by God.
