Home is a Person

Published on: Dec 1, 2007

When I met my wife, I knew I had come home. I understood that home was not a place, but a person. Where ever she is, there is my home. This is true with Christ. We are mistaken to think that heaven is our home. It is not. Our home is Christ. Where ever He is, we are at home.

Heaven is the Old English word for haven. A haven is a safe harbor for ships to wait out storms. It is a temporary stop. Heaven was not created for humans, just as the Lake of Fire was not created for humans. Heaven is for the angels (Gal. 1:8), and the Lake of Fire for the rebellious angels (Matt 25:41). The Earth was created for humans (Gen. 1:26).

But Heaven is where we go temporarily after we die because that is where Jesus resides. And where ever Jesus is, there is our home. But, according to the Bible we are already in heaven (Eph. 2:6) because we are in Jesus already. Likewise, through His Spirit, Jesus is in us here on Earth (Eph. 3:17).

This is what Brother Lawrence understood in his book the Practice of the Presence of God. Where ever he was, and in whatever he did, he was in the presence of the Lord, and at home. This is what true Christian maturity is about. Being content with Christ in any place and circumstance.

Jesus said that if we loved Him we would keep His commandments (John 14:15). Since I love my wife I take care of my home. I take care of her and all that is ours. If we love Jesus we take care of what is His. Jesus said:

Matt 25:35-36
35 For I was an hungred, and ye gave me meat: I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink: I was a stranger, and ye took me in:
36 Naked, and ye clothed me: I was sick, and ye visited me: I was in prison, and ye came unto me. (KJV)

If we love Jesus we take care of Him. Attending to these things that He said above, means that we should be at home in doing them, for we are at home with Jesus. If you don’t feel at home in any of these things, then do you follow His leading by His Spirit? For the Spirit leads us in all that Jesus desires. Perhaps you should consider what Jesus also said.

Matt 25:41
41 Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: (KJV)

Matt 7:21-23
21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.
22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. (KJV)

Being at home with Christ begins with being at home with your family. If you do not love your family as Christ loves the church, then you will not be at home with the church, nor with the lost. But if you are truly at home with Christ, then you will be like Brother Lawrence who was at home any where doing anything. Home is a person, and people.
