Life is Messy
The Crib is Not Clean
Where no oxen are, the crib is clean: but much increase is by the strength of the ox. (KJV)
This proverb has been a favorite of mine for many years. I understand it. If you want to do anything, a mess will usually accompany the project. Recently, I realized that this is a statement on God’s point of view.
God could have made us all as robots or perfect machines that could not sin. Such a creation would lose interest as soon as it was finished in the making. God wants something more. He made a decision before making the creation to allow sin in the world as a consequence of giving us all free will.
Life is messy. When God created the baby, He knew the bathwater would get dirty. Babies need diaper changes frequently, but you love the baby nonetheless. The crib is the creation. The ox in the crib is free will. That which makes the crib unclean is the manure of sin. But the strength of the ox is that when we choose to love and obey God, His life is enriched.
God is not upset about sin. In the days of the Moses, He set up the law to help us understand what sin is and does. The anger of God at sin was the demonstration of how deadly sin is.
God foreknew the consequence of sin that would come from freewill. He had a diaper ready. From the foundation of the Earth, Christ was slain. Do we continue to sin because we now have the blood of Jesus? Of course not. That is, we do not choose to sin. However, because we are living beings that do not understand all things with the same omniscience of God, we will sin as a course of living. The cross and the blood, have been given to us for that reason.
This is incredible news. God is not angry with us when we sin. However, that sin still has consequences. So, wisdom tells us not to sin intentionally. And knowledge tells us that when we unintentionally sin (even with sin that is still in the process of being broken), God loves us and continues to work with us. God does not throw the baby out with the bath water. God wants the strength and increase of the ox. That is good news for us all.
